Our Story

When COVID-19 hit, like most business owners, Katherine McDonald began to cautiously panic.  Concern for the vitality of her brands, LulaKate (@lulakate) and Kate McDonald Bridal (@katemcdonaldbridal), was second to her concern for her co-workers that she refers to as family.   She had no idea what the future would hold or how she would navigate this new normal.

Almost immediately, to help with the shortage of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for front line workers, Katherine began organizing her team and local seamstresses to make face masks for a number of different organizations.  Over 2500 (and counting) face masks were sewn and donated to ICU and NICU units across the country, Hospice organizations, AIDS services, Charleston County School District Food Services Workers, Navajo Native Americans and many others.

Once the need for PPE slowed, Katherine began to brainstorm how to keep her co-workers working and paid. COVID-19 affected the wedding industry tremendously and sales began to decline.  She needed something that she could get to market quickly that would help offset the pause in incoming orders.  Following advice from a friend and since facemasks were becoming a way of life, Katherine decided to launch a line of custom printed masks and other items for companies, schools, hotels, churches, cultural events and other organizations.  This is when James + Hudson, the company, was created.
Proudly designed in Charleston and made in the USA, James + Hudson products are made from Anti-Microbial fabric to help decrease the spread of viruses and communicable diseases. They are non-medical grade and adhere to the CDC recommendations and guidelines of wearing face coverings in public.
Additionally and most importantly, James + Hudson is a proud partner of THRIVE SAVES LIVES.  THRIVE is a nonprofit organization based in Charleston, SC.  It is dedicated to supporting domestic abuse survivors, their families and pets.  James + Hudson donates a portion of sales to THRIVE on a monthly basis.
A graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, Katherine lives in Charleston with her two sons, James and Hudson and their two golden retrievers, Roscoe and Rosie.
